Watch Improvement Happen

by Michael Stone

It's holiday time. As we wrap up 2018, we want to share two notes we received this year. The first is from a specialty contractor in Oregon:Watch Improvement Happen in Your Construction Business #MarkupAndProfit #ConstructionBusinessSuccess

"Hi Michael and Devon,

Thanks for the thank you cards. Things are well on the ___ front.

I'm being stern with our payment schedules with our contracts and choosing the leads that will bear fruit and passing up the ones that may rot on the vine. This has ultimately been keeping my communication with clients lower than usual and rarely any complaints (enabling me to focus on things that matter most, production and profit). We bring in roughly 8-12 leads a week with two being ideal jobs thanks to Brian Javeline's work and website.

I overheard a guy at the lumber yard mention how things have been quiet for him as he acknowledged that the economy is doing alright. You gotta keep up that marketing cycle. Our average job size is $8-26 thousand and the Fast Track Estimating Software is keeping things in check, including me and my natural tendency of being generous ...

We are debt free including taxes and the OCRA is growing. It's not perfect and Utopian by all means but a lot better than it has ever been. My current goal is to reach 3 months of OCRA; I'm almost at one month...

Thanks a million and I look forward to keep in touch and continuing my journey in running this business

-Chris"

It's possible to run your business, not have your business run you. The second note is from a builder in the U.K.:

"For some reason it took me a long time to write this email. The most important thing is your books Michael have been invaluable in reshaping my building business which in turn changed my life. Thank you for that.

For many years I have been 'box standard' builder, making money but never really keeping that elusive life / work balance. I came to the UK , with no building experience whatsoever, freshly after completing Masters in Geography in Poland. The easiest way to survive was to get a job on a building site and that's what I did. After few years I started doing plastering jobs, then bigger and bigger projects. I realised I enjoy business side more than actual working. Shift from being speciality contractor on the tools to general builder wasn't painless but I survived it! I have always had a feeling that building game has been very kind to me, almost like looked after me and it never let me down. I have been able to feed and house my wife and children for the last 16 years, which is some achievement in itself.

In the last three years things have started to take a different shape. I have started to evaluate my life, what I really want from it. And I started slowly changing my business. This time I have treated it as a business! My markup went up from 1.2 to 1.4 last year, and my last job brought me 18k profit on a 40k sale. I couldn't do it without your advice. . . .

I want you to know Michael how I'm grateful for your help. Your books are really life changing, if your readers are happy to look at the mirror and implement necessary changes miracles start happening. . . .

When you see middle aged builders on your workshops next time please tell them that they don't have time to waste. It is now or never. They need to get their life back on track. If polish builder in UK could do it they can too!"
