A Note from a New Friend

Michael,

I reached out to your consulting organization (CPR) about a month ago when I was at my wits end with my construction business. It was very late one night when I stumbled upon your website looking for some practical training aids, seminars, education, or anything to help me. I think it was about 11:30pm CST that night that I left a message on your voicemail. Your wife left me a message the next day, and of course you called me back in a timely fashion.

When you called I must admit that I felt very ashamed of where my business was at that point in time. I felt so embarrassed that I had been working so hard for almost nothing. To my chagrin, I must admit that I didn't call you back because I was very distraught and stressed out over the prospect of losing my business.

Since then I have purchased and ravenously read through your book "Mark Up and Profit." I cannot tell you how much you have helped me personally and with the business. The principles, math, and practical application of the material in your book are great. I cannot wait to put all these things into action as I move forward with my business.

Currently my business partner and I are on a hiatus from doing work. We got ourselves into debt (about $38K) this past year through some bad choices, big expenses, losing money on jobs, and not working within a budget. My business partner is getting a workman's comp settlement any time now, and he is willing to pay off our debt and invest some money into the business. I told him point blank, "That's all well and good, but I'm not going to continue doing business the way we have been. I would rather sit home and do nothing than do another job and lose money on it."

I honestly believe that this time off of work has been a God send, and has helped me rethink the way I want to run my business. I have spent a lot of time in thought and prayer putting together a business plan, budget, overhead projections, sales numbers, S.O.P's for employees and subcontractors, etc. etc. I think that you are so right when you said, "You are either a businessman or a mechanic. You can't be both."

Contracting and construction is in my blood. I started roofing and framing houses with my neighbor who was a general contractor when I was 13 yrs old. I love this business. I love the customers. I love making a difference in people's lives, and leaving them with a better place then when I found it. I truly believe that the things I have learned and continue to learn will help me to be successful in the future.

Mike a great story and thats a great motivator to all of us that have that mission of "better business, better profits and better lifestyle for the Construction contractors. This guy is not alone out there. My advice to the many, many others feeling like him is reach out and get help there is lots of it here and with our company as well.
