Some of you may remember Wilma Rudolph. She was considered the fastest woman in the world in the 1960’s and competed in two Olympic games in 1956 and in 1960. I remember watching her run and often wondered at her ability to do so well. She was a remarkable athlete and a great person. She said, “I believe in me more than anything in this world.

Did you know she had polio as a baby? Her left leg was twisted and braced, she went through many treatments to straighten it.

During the last few years, our industry has been hit as hard as any industry in the US. Many other industries were or have been helped out by big brother Uncle Sam, but we haven’t and probably never will get “bailed out” by the politico’s who manage the purse strings of our government. (With an exception of those who use union labor and build government jobs.)

Because our industry has been hit so hard, many contractors now doubt themselves and their companies. That is understandable. I talk with construction business owners all the time who question whether they should stay in business or find any other way to feed and clothe their families. They have run into all kinds of hardships and are ready to give it up.

If that’s where you are, and if you believe you can better take care of yourself and your families doing other work, that’s what you should do. There is nothing wrong with changing direction, as long as it’s a change for the better, and no one will think the worse of you. Taking care of your family is paramount.

But if you’re staying in business, do you still believe in yourself? Or are you in business out of habit? You need to believe you can make it, overcome the self-doubt and the struggles and do what’s necessary to succeed. If you dont think you can do it, others won’t think you can do it, either. And it’s all over.

Please remember, no matter how bad you have it, no matter how bad business is, your obstacles and problems pale in comparison to what Wilma Rudolph faced and overcame on her way to winning three gold medals in the Olympics. If she can do it, so can you.

If we can help in any way, give us a call.
