I’ve always advocated reading one hour a day. Hard to do? Yes, but there is no free lunch.

Let’s take that a step farther. Have you completed your high school education? Do you have a college degree? If not, there isn’t anyone stopping you from getting it but you. Make all the excuses you want, but you need to do it. If you want more from life than just a paycheck every week, then you need to improve your lot. The first step is getting an education.

Construction isn’t an easy business. If you are in it and running something besides a pick or a shovel, then you are probably a little smarter than the average bear. College courses are not hard, they are just time consuming.

Surveys will tell you that those with a four year degree make more money than those with only a high school education. My first day in college was in 1963. I finished my four year degree in 1995. 32 years, nine months and 5 days later. If an old farm boy like me can get that job done, you can do it as well. Let’s revisit that project and see if you can make a better life for yourself and your family.

I hear you. I started college in 1979, at the age of 18. Went one year, and determined I didn’t need to waste any more time, because I knew everything I needed to know. I finished my Associates Degree in 2009. I took classes online and in the evenings when possible. Most importantly, what I learned helped me tremendously through the difficult economy of custom home building with a family business.
