I’ll bet you have a computer in your home – maybe even a few computers. So do most of your clients.
An electrician I know commented to me on the lack of media wiring done by remodeling contractors. He said, “Media wiring is a natural and it doesn’t cost that much. It is almost criminal not to include it with a remodeling job.”
This might be considered an upsell in some circles, but I think it’s a basic. I believe you are doing a disservice to your customers if you don’t at least give them the opportunity to wire whatever portion of their home you are working in for media. Network wiring isn’t that expensive, if nothing else you can wire and leave pigtails that can be connected at a later time. If you are building new homes, you should prewire every home you build, that shouldn’t even be an option. I know many people use wireless routers, but they have a limited range and a few well-placed walls will limit the range even more. Install hard wires where possible.
Technology changes – and what you install might not be needed down the road. Or it might be. I remember listening to the old time radio shows with my family on Saturday nights, now I watch Netflix movies with my family using the Wii and a wireless connection. What will it be tomorrow? I don’t know and neither do you. But do what you can to make sure your clients are ready for it.
