Got a call from one of our coaching clients this last week. He related how one of his customers arbitrarily decided to change the payment schedule that was clearly written on the contract. The customer said he thought the payments were more than the work being done and he was going to start holding money until “things were caught up.”
I asked our coaching client what he did when presented with this nonsense. He said, “I told him he had 24 hours to get the payment due to me or I would shut the job down.” The customer took him seriously and paid the money due.
I reminded our client that he now had to be careful to follow the contract exactly, so his client wouldn’t have any cause to get back at him. Our client also told me he has a mandatory arbitration clause in his contract to handle any and all disputes. He also met with his staff and guys on the job to watch for any more problems with this customer. Music to my ears. That is the way it should be done.
