They are building a new highway across and above Hoover Dam on the Nevada/Arizona border. We stopped at Hoover Dam in August, I caught a quick picture of their progress. It was (at least) 116 degrees outside so we didn’t spend a lot of time watching them work.

Hoover Dam Bridge

You can easily see the support arch the bridge will ride on, and the highway coming in from both sides. The deck where I was standing is about 650 feet above the river and the roadway will be that much higher when complete. The little knot at the very top of the arch is a group of workers.

What an incredible piece of engineering – first the dam, now the bridge over it.

  1. Olivia Gurule says:

Will a person driving be required to go through or can you still take the bridge over the dam?

  2. I contacted my concierge friend who said that you could still cross Hoover dam by car as usual. They may stop trucks due to the security thing but unless you want to go through kingman and up the other side of the river, the dam is the only way to get across. She has not heard of any problems.
